Fabric Search

I’m on the hunt for some fabric for my little man. I want to make him a snuggle blanket – especially for him from me. Problem is … 1) I’m having a hard time finding/deciding on fabric and 2) Spending alot of fabric makes me nervous because I’m a very beginning sewer.

We’re going to migrate the woodland/forest theme into the kid’s room, because it still very much suites Jemma and a little boy fits into the woods just fine. So, part of me is looking for something woodsy. I also like nautical things for boys. I’m not at all feeling monsters or robots.

So far, I’ve decided to go with a regular cotton and a soft minky. I’m even going to try one of those silky bindings … pending on how my beginner skills play out. I’m going to practicing with the binding on a little lovie first though.

These are the couple fabrics I’ve run across so far. Boy options are few and far between! These two are from Etsy …

And these two are from my local fabric store …
Left – gray design with turquoise minky (the colors didn’t come across too well) & Right – leaves with dark gray minky
What’s your favorite? Any suggestions on where to continue my search?

We have that top owl one in a wet bag, and I love it! I made a small blanket out of flannel and minky, with batting in between, and it is the super snuggliest thing ever. I want to make more.I hear you on the boy fabric dearth. I tend to just make do with what I can find cheap, so I understand if you want to keep your prices down, but…Spoonflower has some of the funkiest designs.http://www.spoonflower.com/fabric/118112http://www.spoonflower.com/fabric/519462http://www.spoonflower.com/fabric/381315etc.And I also find that Pacific Fabrics sometimes has a better/different selection of certain types of fabrics. http://www.pacificfabrics.com/shop/product/soft-p… Worth a look, anyway! You might also try thrift stores or yard sales to see if there's a retro blanket in good shape you can repurpose, and then tell everyone it's vintage and upcycled and have them be all impressed. ;)

Ooo … those are all awesome! Cost is a factor, but I may just have to splurge :) I LOVE the idea of repurposing something too. I'll have to keep my eye out!

I like your fabric choices. We go to the fabric depot in Portland. It a huge place just filled with fabric and they always have great deals going on. They even have a section for baby fabric. Hope that helps :)

I LOVE that owl fabric. I bought it laminated a few weeks ago and sewed the edges for a super cute splash mat under Casey's chair. He's SO MESSY when he eats! It's adorable (and sometimes frustrating) but mostly adorable. I just love that fabric though. Good choice!

A splat mat is totally on my to-do list … I'm tired of scrubbing the floor around Jem's spot!

I'm going to have to wander down to Fabric Depot soon – I have a little bit left on a gift card for there too :)
